Program Objectives:

  1. Increase awareness of socially appropriate strategies for solving problems and resolving conflicts
  2. Develop knowledge of applicable leadership, study, and organizational skills
  3. Promote an appreciation for community volunteerism
  4. Reinforce skills taught through mentoring, service learning, and cultural arts activities

Program Outcomes and Evaluation for FAll 2010:

  • A minimum of 18 children (75% of enrolled class) will attend at least 12 Second Step/Lead and Learn curriculum classes (75% of classes offered in one semester). (goal exceeded for Fall 2010~21 children attended at least 12 sessions)
  • 18 children (75%) and 4 adults (80%) will participate in a minimum of 2 service learning activities during the semester. (goal exceeded for Fall 2010~22 children and 4 adults)
  • A minimum of 16 children (Two-thirds of enrolled class) will demonstrate an increase in perceived social-emotional competence as measured by the pre/post Attitude Survey (Second Step curriculum). (goal exceeded for Fall 2010~18 children demonstrated an increase)
  • A minimum of 16 children (Two-thirds of enrolled class) will demonstrate an increase in knowledge of nonviolent conflict resolution skills as measured by the pre/post Attitude Survey (Second Step curriculum). (goal exceeded for Fall 2010~19 children scored in the positive percentage of change range)

2010 Program Statistics

  • 89 contact hours were spent with children in 40 Lead and Learn classes and 2 community events
  • LightShare served 117 children, 98 families, and 12 senior adults. An average of 12 children attended Lead and Learn classes in the Spring and Summer of 2010, and an average of 24 children participated in Lead and Learn classes in Fall 2010.
  • 14 volunteers from the community assisted with Lead and Learn
  • 2,524 healthy snacks were served to an average of 40 children per week
